Carrasco and bullpen struggles, Mets offense comes up just short in 8-7 loss

Carrasco and bullpen struggles, Mets offense comes up just short in 8-7 loss

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports The Mets almost had another dramatic comeback, but it was not to be. The Mets have done two things very well this year. 1) They never count themselves out, even in games when they are facing a daunting deficit, which has resulted in some impressive comebacks. And 2) they win series. Nine straight series, to be exact—with one split in there. These two factors have been the main things that have made the start to this season so promising. Today, they demonstrated the first quality fairly effectively. Despite falling behind, the team...

Final score: Mariners 8, Mets 7—RIP series winning streak

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports For the first time in 2022, the Mets have lost a series. The Mets came into Sunday having a chance to extend their improbable streak of winning series to start the 2022 season. Alas, a rough start from Carlos Carrasco and a poor performance from the bullpen did not allow the Mets to accomplish this, as they fell to the Mariners 8-7 to suffer their first series loss of the year. Carrasco was strong for his first two innings for the Mets, but the Mariners suddenly started making consistently hard contact against him in the third inning....

Tylor Megill to injured list with right biceps inflammation

Photo by Greg Fiume/ Colin Holderman has been called up from Triple-A to take Megill’s spot on the roster. The Mets announced this afternoon that Tylor Megill has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 12, with right biceps inflammation. The Mets’ Opening Day starter has done an excellent job in 2022 filling in for the injured Jacob deGrom, but got beat up in his most recent start, giving up eight runs in 1 1⁄3 innings. This performance ballooned his excellent 2.43 ERA to 4.41 for the season. There was some speculation after the game that...

Mazeika Magic lives again

Mazeika Magic lives again

Photo by Mike Stobe/ The Mets get back in the win column on the back of timely hitting, Patrick Mazeika, and an electric Edwin Díaz performance. Baseball is a long game. The season is months and months. Even the games themselves can be long. Teams go on long winning streaks, and even the best teams struggle, and it can be a roller coaster — just ask the Dodgers about that, at the time of this writing. Or, ask Patrick Mazeika about it, from the first inning of this game on. Mazeika and starting pitcher Chris Bassitt, really struggled in that first inning, despite the...

Final score: Mets 5, Mariners 4 — The duality of Man-zeika

Photo by Mike Stobe/ Patrick Mazeika had a roller coaster game, but came through with the game winning solo homer in the seventh, putting the Mets back in the win column. The Mets eked by Seattle by a score of 5-4, and the game was every bit of a up and down affair as one would imagine. Chris Bassitt threw a solid but laborious 5.2 innings, walking three, striking out eight and surrendering five hits. He and Patrick Mazeika — making his 2022 debut after James McCann suffered a broken hamate bone — had trouble all game getting on the same page, from disguising the...

Drew Smith’s scoreless streak ends and Mets waste gem from Max Scherzer

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports The dead balls were also prominently on display tonight, as the Mets drop the series opener to the Mariners. The Mets lost a close game to the Mariners 2-1 in the first meeting of the two clubs in five years. The game ended up to be a pitchers’ duel, despite early indications that the Mets offense may have had a big night in them. But, after making Marco Gonzales work early, the offense was stymied, despite a couple of balls hit very hard that had Mets hitters staring into space with a mix of frustration and perplexity. The Mets got to...

Final score: Mariners 2, Mets 1—A soft-tossing lefty? Mets are doomed.

Photo by Elsa/ Max Scherzer was great again tonight, but the Mets were unable to break through against Marco Gonzales and Drew Smith finally gave up a run. The Mets looked like they had Mariners lefty Marco Gonzales figured out early, as they got out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and made Gonzales work hard over the first couple of frames, but unfortunately the Mets allowed him to settle in and ultimately fell to the Mariners 2-1 in this series opener. Max Scherzer was excellent tonight, holding the Mariners to just one run on three hits with six strikeouts through...

James McCann has a fracture of his left hamate bone

Photo by Rich Schultz/ The Mets’ catcher will be sidelined for about six weeks. Prior to tonight’s series opener against the Mariners, the Mets announced that James McCann underwent an x-ray this morning that revealed a fracture of his left hamate bone. McCann had been out of the lineup for the past few days with “left wrist soreness” and initially expressed optimism that he could return as soon as today. However, today’s news revealed a far more serious injury, which will require surgery to repair. The approximate timeline for this surgery is six weeks, but...
