Grading the Canes’ Drafts: Part 1

Photo by Bruce Bennett/ The Hurricanes have built their team largely through the draft, but not every draft pick pans out. How do the Canes’ draft classes look through the advantage of hindsight? In recent years, the Carolina Hurricanes have been reaping the benefits of a well-oiled draft machine, one that’s contributed to the team’s ascension from decade-long cellar dweller to playoff regular. Not every draft pick has lived up to expectations, but that’s standard in a league that drafts over 200 players every year yet only has 700-some players on active rosters at any given...

The best remaining unrestricted free agents

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports We’re almost a week into free agency, but there are plenty of targets for the Carolina Hurricanes. The start of free agency is always a blur and this year without the tampering period before free agency it has taken a little bit longer for everything to pan out. Since Don Waddell has taken the helm, the Carolina Hurricanes have made most of their impact moves days into free agency. They were able to land Calvin de Haan and Jake Gardiner by waiting out the market and getting value players. So far this year the Canes have only signed one UFA, Jesper Fast....

Taking stock of available goaltending options for Canes

Photo by Jamie Sabau/NHLI via With free agency in full swing, we take a look at potentially available goaltenders still on the market and on the trade block. After a busy few days of free agency across the NHL, the available market has dwindled down. What was a big pool of available goaltenders has shrunk significantly, with the Hurricanes deciding not to make a move on any of them. The Canes signed Jesper Fast and Joakim Ryan, and there’s a good chance the team is done with free agency with little cap space left. General manager Don Waddell said that doesn’t mean the team...
