Sabres trim roster, send Matt Savoie to junior, 21 players to Amerks

The Buffalo Sabres on Saturday assigned center Matt Savoie to his junior team and loaned 21 players to the Rochester Americans, their AHL affiliate. They have 34 players left in training camp. They must finalize their 23-man regular-season roster by 5 p.m. on Oct. 10. The Sabres gave Savoie, the ninth overall pick this year, a long look during camp, awarding him three preseason games before sending to the Winnipeg Ice. Savoie, 18, was the ... Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen happy with Sabres’ plan: ‘It’s about the starts’

BUFFALO – Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s terrific 32-save outing in Saturday afternoon’s 3-1 preseason win likely won’t sway the Sabres. They decided months ago that the Finn, a prospect labeled as their goalie of the future, should start the season in the minors. So as they trim their training camp roster in the coming days, they’ll almost certainly assign the him to Rochester, where he will carry the load for the Americans. Buffalo’s net, at least early ... The Buffalo Sabres host the Pittsburgh Penguins (more like the WBS Penguins, based on their projected lineup) today, Saturday, at 1 pm. The Penguins are dressing a largely AHL/prospect lineup after trimming their preseason roster to 45 players on Friday. A few familiar faces will be suiting up, including Drake Caggiula, Alex Nylander, Chad Ruhwedel and Dustin Tokarski. (Tokarski is not expected to play.) Meanwhile, the Sabres’ roster for today’s game is a healthy mix of NHLers and...

After two years in KHL, Lawrence Pilut returns to Sabres mature defenseman

BUFFALO – Sabres defenseman Lawrence Pilut chose his words carefully, refusing to dwell on the past. In 2020, Pilut bolted overseas, leaving the Sabres to join Chelyabinsk Traktor, a Kontinental Hockey League team in Russia. His decision stunned the Sabres’ old regime, which believed the Swede was on the cusp of securing regular NHL duty. “I don’t want to talk about that too much,” Pilut, who reportedly wanted a one-way contract as a restricted ... Photo by Len Redkoles/NHLI via At 22 years old, he’s poised to be a top-pair defenseman this season There are a lot of Sabres fans who if you told them right after Mattias Samuelsson was drafted in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft that he would be a top-pairing defenseman, they’d probably ask what in the world happened to make it so. Sometimes first impressions are the worst ones. Fresh off standout season in Rochester, Sean Malone could be in Sabres’ plans

BUFFALO – At times last season, center Seth Malone said coach Seth Appert would pull him aside and tell him, “You’re right there.” In his return to the Sabres organization, the West Seneca native quickly seized a leading role in Rochester, developing into arguably the Americans’ most versatile presence. Malone had become what he called a “bubble guy,” offering valuable depth. Sooner or later, a recall to the Sabres seemed inevitable. “And then I ... The Buffalo Sabres have reached the midway point of their preseason schedule, following last night’s loss in Columbus. A young roster hit a wall in the 4-1 loss, saved largely by the debut of Eric Comrie in net. (Quite frankly: it could’ve been much worse.) Now, the Sabres as a team have a few days to focus on practice before their next game. It’s also possible that we’ll see a few more roster cuts between today and Saturday afternoon’s game against Pittsburgh. Here’s...

At 41, Sabres goalie Craig Anderson still motivated to prove doubters wrong

BUFFALO – Craig Anderson left town five months ago knowing he could return to the Sabres and play his 20th NHL season if he desired. In his first year here, besides often giving the Sabres terrific goaltending, the veteran’s professionalism and work ethic set a high standard for the rebuilding team. He quickly became a leader and a mentor during what he has called an “amazing” year. Even though he was about to turn 41, ... BUFFALO – After watching the first two preseason games, Sabres goalie Eric Comrie will likely be making his debut in tonight’s road contest against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
