Penguins still have some unanswered questions this offseason

Photo by Joe Sargent/NHLI via Bottom-six scoring, goaltending, and the third defense pairing being among them. With the weekend signing of Cody Ceci the Pittsburgh Penguins now have a full roster and just a little over $1.5 million in salary cap space remaining. It should probably wrap up what has been a fairly busy offseason. Justin Schultz, Conor Sheary, and Patrick Marleau left in free agency, Jack Johnson was bought out, Patric Hornqvist and Matt Murray were traded. Kasperi Kapanen, Mike Matheson, and Colton Sceviour were acquired, while Mark Jankowski, Evan Rodrigues, and Ceci...

The Penguins have signed forward Josh Currie to a one-year contract. The two-way deal runs through the 2020.21 campaign and is valued at $700,000 at the NHL level.Details: https://t.co/cOfZn5BK4B pic.twitter.com/OpugVST5LC— Pittsburgh...

Penguins Day 1 Free agency recap: solving third line problems, hopefully

Photo by Rich Graessle/Icon Sportswire via The Pittsburgh Penguins think their signings today have rectified their third line issues with Evan Rodrigues and Mark Jankowski Entering yesterday’s start of free agency, the Pittsburgh Penguins made two signings that they hope will solve their third line questions. In the playoffs, their third line ended up being a major weakness with Jared McCann centering Patric Hornqvist and Patrick Marleau. McCann was a healthy scratch in Game 3 and had the least amount of minutes of any Penguin in Game 4. Hornqvist scored one power play goal all...

Browsing the RFA list for bargains

Photo by Claus Andersen/ Finding players some other team can’t afford, but the Leafs can, isn’t easy. The Evan Rodrigues situation is clear: He got a big arbitration award a year ago that kicked up his salary to a point that, in this new flat-cap world, no one wants to pay. He’s on his third NHL team because of it. The RFA rules for Qualifying Offers mean his offer has to be his current $2 million salary, and he’s not going to get that deal. The Leafs can either get him to agree to something more in keeping with his value, or he can become a free agent, and see who bids the...
