Open thread: Who’s your pick for 2021 NFL MVP?

Kirthmon F. Dozier, Detroit Free Press Matthew Stafford is a lucrative bet. Yesterday’s notes highlighted Jared Goff’s 80/1 odds for 2021 NFL MVP. It’s a long shot that won’t happen with the Detroit Lions in rebuild mode, but there are plenty of better odds to choose from—most notably, a familiar face in Los Angeles. Question of the day: Who’s your pick for 2021 NFL MVP My answer: I’d take the odds on Stafford. Let’s look at those with better odds than Stafford: Patrick Mahomes: won the award two years ago and has set the bar very high. Players...

With sports betting now legal in the state of Detroit, now is a great time to throw away some money on a futures NFL bet for the first time! Right on cue, BetOnline.ag dropped odds for the 2021 NFL MVP just a mere nine months before the award is handed. As you may expect, the shortest odds involve some of the league’s best quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes leads the way with 4-to-1 odds. Aaron Rodgers is right behind him at 9-to-1, and Josh Allen is 10-to-1. Want to take the homer...

NFL Mock Draft 1.0: Lions Select Jared Goff Replacement; Patriots Stay Put

The 2021 NFL Draft is less than three weeks away, and the rumor mill is turning faster than you can believe. Of course, most of those rumors have nothing to do with the No. 1 overall pick (almost definitely Trevor Lawrence) or even No. 2, for that matter (likely Zach Wilson), so the real draft […] The post NFL Mock Draft 1.0: Lions Select Jared Goff Replacement; Patriots Stay Put appeared first on NESN.com.

Detroit Lions top 6 needs for 2021 NFL Draft

With the dust on free agency nearly settled, it’s time to evaluate the Lions’ biggest holes on the roster leading up to this year’s draft. Last week, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell noted that he doesn’t expect many more roster moves between now and the start of the draft. “Doesn’t mean there’s not things that we’re not going to look at or want to do, but I don’t think we’re in any hurry to do anything before the draft,” Campbell said. Detroit did add $15 million in cap space recently by restructuring Jared Goff’s contract, giving them some...

Detroit Lions: NFL.com mock draft throws shade at Jared Goff

For the first time since 2008, the Detroit Lions will kick off the regular season with a quarterback not named Matthew Stafford as their starter. And it appears the player destined to replace Stafford under center this September will be Jared Goff. Breaking down the biggest misconceptions of the Jared Goff restructure

Breaking down the biggest misconceptions of the Jared Goff restructure

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports The PODcast crew breaks down the most common misconceptions of the Jared Goff contract restructure. The Detroit Lions made a significant move on Wednesday, restructuring Jared Goff’s contract in a move that clears up $15 million in cap space in the immediate, but pushes that cap hit across the next three years evenly. While it may represent a longer investment in Goff—a quarterback with a lot of accomplishments, but also someone who has gone through some serious struggles in the past two seasons—it also could have been a necessary...

With Jared Goff, it's hard to see Detroit Lions drafting a QB with No. 7 pick. Here's why.

With all the praise heaped on Jared Goff, plus a contract restructure, it doesn't appear the Detroit Lions will take a QB at No. 7 in the NFL draft.

POLL: Do you approve of the Jared Goff contract restructure?

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports Was this the right, necessary move? Or did the Lions start a troubling trend of kicking the can down the road? On Wednesday morning, news broke that the Detroit Lions had restructured the contract of quarterback Jared Goff. The Lions took $20 million of Goff’s 2021 salary and converted that into a signing bonus that goes in Goff’s pocket immediately, but the cap hit of which is spread across the next four years of his contract evenly. In the most simplest of terms, the Lions took $15 million off of this year’s salary cap and...

Notes: Details emerge on rocky relationship between Goff, McVay

Photo by Abbie Parr/ They may have played nice in the media, but it sounded like things were pretty toxic by Goff’s last days in LA. Last week when the teams could finally make it official, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff played nicely with the media. While rumors of the growing rift between them bubbled beneath the surface, both decided to put on happy faces in their press conferences. “I’m so thankful for my time there,” Goff said of his time with McVay and general manager Les Snead. “I had so many great...

Jared Goff seems set to be Lions starter for at least two years

Photo by Dylan Buell/ It has become more likely that Goff will still be in Detroit in 2022 I can’t say that I feel bad for a guy who will make over $100 million to play football, but I have concerns about what Jared Goff will be forced to deal with during his first season in Detroit. Though we knew it was coming for weeks, the Lions officially lost receiver Kenny Golladay when he signed with the New York Giants recently. The news came not longer after Marvin Jones, Detroit’s leading receiver in 2020, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions’ answer to these...

Report: Lions restructure Goff’s contract, create $15M in cap space for 2021

Via the Detroit Lions The Lions committed to Goff a little longer, but they finally have some cap space to maneuver. As many expected, the Detroit Lions have reportedly restructured the contract of quarterback Jared Goff, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Per Yates, the Lions have converted $20 million of Goff’s $25.325 million base salary for the 2021 season into a signing bonus. This gives Goff that $20 million in pocked immediately, while spreading that $20 million of cap hit across the next four seasons. So instead of a $25.235 million cap hit, Goff’s will...
