Bullpen blows another one, but Wheeler looks strong in Phillies loss to Mets

Bullpen blows another one, but Wheeler looks strong in Phillies loss to Mets

Zack Wheeler pieced together a strong performance on Wednesday night, especially considering he's dealing with a nail issue on his right middle finger. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn't hold things together as the Phillies dropped a pivotal contest to the Mets, 5-4, at Citizens Bank Park.  Wheeler scattered seven hits and allowed three runs. He struck out two over a season-high 7 1/3 innings. “You can’t imagine the pain that he was in,” manager Joe Girardi said. Wheeler left with one out in the eighth inning. Adam Morgan came in as relief and surrendered a run allowing the Mets to...

Gamethread 9/16: Mets at Phillies

Photo by Mitchell Leff/ Are your fingers alright? Zack Wheeler returns to the mound tonight, hopefully with the help of someone else in regards to putting on his pants. In retrospect, this will probably end up being a funny injury, one of the ones you chuckle about such as the player who had to miss a game because of spending too much time in a tanning bed. In the midst of a playoff chase - not funny at all. Wheeler will face his old team again tonight, this time facing off against the best pitcher in the National League. For the Phillies: Zack Wheeler gets the start tonight at...

Desperate times: Phillies vs. Mets series preview

Desperate times: Phillies vs. Mets series preview

The Phillies can’t let Jeff McNeil beat them | Photo by Jim McIsaac/ Time is running out for these two National League East rivals As Marlins fans (They apparently do exist! Who knew?) have let me know on Twitter, the Phillies’ most recent series didn’t go so well. The bullpen continued to suck, and losing J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, and Zack Wheeler to injury didn’t exactly improve the team’s overall quality of play. But there’s no time to dwell on the past. The Phillies - or at least the healthy members of the team - need to put the last series behind them and focus on...

Gamethread 9/13: ANOTHER doubleheader!

Photo by Cliff Hawkins/ Let’s be honest: you’re not watching the first game Hey, you know what’s a great way of playing a doubleheader? Doing it totally undermanned! J.T. Realmuto is out, Rhys Hoskins isn’t playing in the first game, Spencer Howard is going to be out for a while and Zack Wheeler still isn’t ready. This promises to be a great one. Plus - they’re facing their old top prospect to top it all off! Huzzah! This is how the team will line up in the first game: Game one. #RingTheBell : @NBCSPhilly : @1210WPHT : https://t.co/7M7oNitezi // https://t.co/vgbMhIMsON...

Scherzer good, Wheeler better: Phillies 3, Nationals 0

Scherzer good, Wheeler better: Phillies 3, Nationals 0

Another strong outing for Zack Wheeler | Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports The Phillies new ace outdueled the Nationals’ old one There was a time when the Washington Nationals could send Max Scherzer to the mound and have full confidence that they’d have the superior pitcher that day. And while Scherzer may still be better than most pitchers in the major leagues, in 2020, he doesn’t appear to be as good as Zack Wheeler. He definitely wasn’t as good as Wheeler on Wednesday night as the Nationals were shut out by Wheeler and the Phillies 3-0. This was a relatively quiet night for the...
