Aaron Loup is a pitcher for this moment

Photo by Sean M. Haffey/ The veteran lefty, originally signed on a minor league deal, is the Rays best bet against the powerful Dodgers lineup. During this 2020 playoff run, the Tampa Bay Rays have leaned hard on their bullpen to sustain leads. Whether it be the third inning, the sixth, or any any other other point in the game where the Rays have a lead and the need to preserve it, they have turned to their top-end relievers to close out the game. So far in the playoffs that has mostly meant it was up to Nick Anderson, Diego Castillo, and Pete Fairbanks to end any hopes for the...

The Rays high fastballs and the mighty Dodgers lineup

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports How will they match up? This was where my mind went when Correa hit a walk-off home run against Nick Anderson’s high fastball. I think a lot of Rays fans went to this place. Stop throwing a high fastball!!!Stop throwing a high fastball!!!Stop throwing a high fastball!!!Stop throwing a high fastball!!!Stop throwing a high fastball!!!Stop throwing a high fastball!!!#Rays.— Homin Lee (@Homein22) October 16, 2020 I tweeted in anger; this was a stupid tweet. Sometimes the Rays have given up home runs, but at the same time, the high fastball strategy...

World Series Preview: Ryan Yarbrough could be the key to beating the Dodgers

World Series Preview: Ryan Yarbrough could be the key to beating the Dodgers

Photo by Julio Aguilar/ The big bad bats now preside from the left side... One of the big storylines of this postseason for the Rays has been the “Four” Horseman: Nick Anderson, Diego Castillo, Peter Fairbanks.... and John Curtiss. While the meme has been great, the numbers have been even better. The actual Big Three have combined for an astounding 28.1 innings (remember: no off days!), allowing a combined nine earned runs for a tidy 2.86 ERA. (Take out Curtiss’ 0.2 IP, 5 ER disaster against New York, and that’s another six innings with only one earned run allowed.) Part of what...

ALCS Game 5 Instant Reaction: DRaysBay Playoff Podcast Series

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports Well, we have a series. Another night where we expected a celebratory podcast, but it will have to wait. Houston wins this one 4-3 after Carlos Correa smashed a Nick Anderson 96 mph fastball over the centerfield wall to walk it off. In terms of scriptwriting, this is the episode where the bad guy wins in the end. But the series isn’t over yet. In fact, the Rays still have a 3-2 lead! It may not feel like that, but hopefully listening to this podcast assists you in dealing with last night’s lost. It certainly helped us by recording it.

ALCS Game 2 Instant Reaction: DRaysBay Playoff Podcast Series

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports 2-0 lead and we’re still a little nervous. Why? Apple Download Link The Rays have a two-game lead in the ALCS. They’re two wins away from the World Series. They’ve played some amazing defense, and the pitching has gotten out of tons of danger. Why do we still feel a little nervous? Is it because the Astros have made tons of hard contact against both Blake Snell and Charlie Morton? Is it because Nick Anderson finally seemed at least mortal yesterday, and this insane postseason schedule may finally be catching up to him? Maybe deep down in our...

Projecting the Rays-Yankees Deciding Game 5

Photo by Christian Petersen/ The ALDS comes down to this. The Rays and the Yankees have played their way to a decisive game five in the ALDS, and now both teams are set up to give this last game something approaching their best shot. JT Morgan ran down what that might look like for the Rays, with Tyler Glasnow starting on his bullpen day, Charlie Morton available for an inning just two days after his last start, and the Rays big three righties of Peter Fairbanks, Diego Castillo, and Nick Anderson all set to empty the tank. On the Yankees side that likely means Gerrit Cole on short rest...

DRaysBay Playoff Podcast Series: ALDS Game 2 Instant Reaction

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports Brett Rutherford, Danny Russell, and Brett Phillips giving all the praise to “The Stable” after the Rays tie the series at 1. Apple Download Link EXHALE. After a stellar performance from the Stable, the Rays and Yankees are tied at one game a piece in the ALDS. Aaron Boone tried to pull a fast one when he yanked his starter (or opener) after the first inning and let the Rays tee off on J.A. Happ. With a performances as strong as Diego Castillo’s and Nick Anderson’s, home runs from Mike Zunino and Manuel Margot almost go unnoticed. Those big...

ALDS Game 2: Rays 7, Yankees 5

Photo by Christian Petersen/ Nick Anderson saves the day After a gut-wrenching Game 1 defeat, the Rays looked to Tyler Glasnow to even up the series with the Yankees and avoid a 2-0 deficit. The Yankees went with young rookie Deivi Garcia to open the game, but quickly turned to J.A. Happ to pitch the bulk innings.
