Morton is Here… Now what’s next for the Braves?

The Atlanta Braves have bolstered their rotation after signing Charlie Morton, but there’s more that needs to be done. A week and some change after the signing of Drew Smyly, the Atlanta Braves made yet another splash with the signing of Charlie Morton. These two signings echoed a bit of what occurred during the last […] Morton is Here… Now what’s next for the Braves? - Tomahawk Take - Tomahawk Take - Atlanta Braves News & Fan Community

Braves payroll breakdown: Where things stand currently

Photo by Sean M. Haffey/ Here is a look at Atlanta’s payroll situation after the additions of Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly. We entered the offseason expecting to see a slow-moving free agent market, as teams around the league found themselves with constrained revenues due to a 60-game regular season played without fans. At this point, everyone seems to be hoping that 2021 brings a more normal-looking regular season, but the outlook for that is still uncertain. MLB hopes to have fans back in attendance next season, but what future attendance looks like remains to be...

Ask Talking Chop: Braves Mailbag Call

Photo by Mark Cunningham/MLB Photos via The 2020 offseason rolls on and the Atlanta Braves have been one of the few active teams signing both Drew Smyly and Charlie Morton to one-year deals in hopes that they can bolster the 2021 rotation. With that as a backdrop, this seems like a good time for another mailbag. Hit us up with any of your Braves related or Major League Baseball at large questions. If I can’t answer them, I will find someone who can. If you have a question for this week’s mailbag you can leave them below in the form of a comment or you can email...

Braves have decisions to make before upcoming non-tender deadline

Photo by Cooper Neill/MLB Photos via The non-tender deadline for this offseason is 7 p.m. ET on December 2. The Atlanta Braves are going to have some decisions to make on a couple of their arbitration-eligible players. After the additions of infielder Jack Mayfield, LHP Drew Smyly and RHP Charlie Morton, Atlanta has 39 players on the 40-man roster. However, the Braves are not really in a roster crunch, as they have other avenues they could pursue to open up space if they need to. The non-tender process this offseason is more about deciding whether or not to hand out...

Braves Offseason: What's left for Atlanta after signing Charlie Morton?

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports Marcell Ozuna is one of the many sluggers connected to the Braves in the early weeks of the offseason. Who else makes sense? The Braves and Alex Anthopoulos have been an active bunch in recent weeks, signing Drew Smyly and Charlie Morton to one-year deals to bolster their young rotation. As we pass Thanksgiving and approach what would normally be the Winter Meetings in a few weeks — it’s virtual this year, by the way — let’s take a look at what the Braves still need to address and some options. A big bat ... or maybe...

The Daily Chop: Early offseason action, Charlie Morton notes and more

Photo by Mary DeCicco/MLB Photos via The MLB offseason has been largely quiet but the Atlanta Braves have been one of the few teams that has been active. That should not be that big a surprise as we have seen Alex Anthopoulos be aggressive early over the course of his time running Atlanta’s front office. So far the Braves have added Drew Smyly and Charlie Morton to the rotation. Negotiations with Marcell Ozuna likely won’t heat up until we know whether or not the league will utilize the universal DH again in 2021, but it would not be surprising to see the Braves...

Get your “Charlie Freaking Morton” shirt now

The Atlanta Braves have been the most active team so far this offseason adding rotation upgrades in Drew Smyly and now Charlie Morton. Morton of course began his career with the Braves but found substantial success late in his career. He spent the last two seasons with the Rays and helped them reach the World Series in 2020. The Braves will be looking for similar results next season. You can celebrate Morton’s arrival with the brand new “Charlie Freaking Morton” T-Shirt from our friends at Breaking T. The Braves shored up their 2020 weakness by adding Charlie Morton to the rotation

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports Atlanta somehow won a divisional title while spending most of 2020 with a ramshackle rotation. The front office has done its part to fix things for 2021 in that department. Today, the Braves continued what’s actually been a pretty busy start to their offseason. They stayed in a similar lane to the Josh Tomlin and Drew Smyly signings, in that they signed a veteran pitcher to a one-year deal. This time, the veteran pitcher joining Atlanta on a one-year deal is a guy who actually started his big league career with the Braves back in 2008....

5 Black Friday ideas for the Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves have quite a shopping list for next Spring, but are any real bargains available? The early bird may get its worm, but there’s often a high cost — such as when the Atlanta Braves inked Drew Smyly recently to a deal that made him ignore other multi-year offers. But when you go […] 5 Black Friday ideas for the Atlanta Braves - Tomahawk Take - Tomahawk Take - Atlanta Braves News & Fan Community

Braves sign Drew Smyly to one year deal for $11M

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports A bit a surprise for a 31-year-old lefty who experienced a huge surge in strikeouts in 2020. The Braves have signed left handed pitcher Drew Smyly to a one year deal worth $11 million, the team announced Monday afternoon. Smyly, 31, had an extreme 2020 where he struck out an absurd 37.8% of the batters he faced with the Giants while making seven appearances (five starts) over 26 innings. His ERA was 3.42, but his 2.01 FIP and 2.56 xFIP rated among the league’s best for those who made at least five starts. Prior to 2020, he was merely OK with a career ERA...
